In accordance with the requirements of Directive 2002/99/EC, the European Community has drawn up a list of Third Countries, from which EU Member States may import egg products for human consumption. Importers in EU Member States are not permitted to import egg products from countries which are not on the list.
The approved Third Country list for imports of egg products for human consumption can be found in Part I of Annex I of Commission Regulation 2008/798.
In addition, the country of origin must be listed for the appropriate species in Commission Decision 2011/163/EC (as amended), on the approval of residue monitoring plans submitted by Third Countries, in accordance with Council Directive 96/23/EC, concerning measures to monitor certain substances and residues thereof, in live animals and animal products.
As per Commission Decision 2011/163/EC, Japan does not have an approved residue monitoring programme in place. It is therefore forbidden / illegal to import Japanese origin eggs and egg products into the EU or UK.
